Ericsson is reshaping the future of cloud-native networks with the introduction of its Compact Packet Core, designed to simplify the transition to cloud-native infrastructure for Communication Service Providers (CSPs). This innovative solution enables efficient modernization of existing Packet Core networks, supporting both 4G and 5G technologies. By offering an optimized, footprint-reduced solution, it significantly streamlines deployment and upgrades, with pre-configured setups and automation that reduce complexity and ensure faster migration.

The Compact Packet Core is a scalable, future-proof platform supporting both 5G Non-Standalone (NSA) and 5G Standalone (SA) networks. The solution includes cloud-native Packet Core Controller (PCC) and Packet Core Gateway (PCG) functions, hosted on a compact one-rack version of Ericsson’s Cloud-Native Infrastructure Solution (CNIS). This global solution, built on proven Ericsson Packet Core software, minimizes deployment time by offering pre-defined parameter settings and automated migration procedures, ultimately maximizing the return on investment for CSPs.

Ericsson’s Compact Packet Core simplifies the complex migration process, providing CSPs with a comprehensive solution for seamless upgrades and ongoing software innovation. It also offers solution lifecycle management, ensuring networks are continuously updated and secure, providing peace of mind for operators.

Monica Zethzon, Head of Solution Area Core Networks at Ericsson, explains, “With the Compact Packet Core, we are introducing a simplified, efficient solution for upgrading to cloud-native technology and deploying 5G Core. It simplifies modernization, maximizes the potential of our cloud-native software, and enables CSPs to accelerate their digital transformation.”

The solution delivers cloud-native capabilities such as automation, In-Service Software Upgrades (ISSU), and Container-as-a-Service (CaaS) rolling upgrades, helping CSPs adapt to new use cases or network demands. It reduces deployment complexity by providing 80% fewer parameters to adjust and can cut energy and hardware footprint by up to 30%, thanks to its support for the latest CPU technologies.

Ericsson’s Compact Packet Core also addresses common challenges faced by CSPs during transitions from legacy infrastructure, ensuring continuity of service and preserving business logic during migration, upgrades, and expansion. As a result, operators benefit from a seamless transition to cloud-native environments, with fewer integration hurdles and reduced costs and migration time.

Glen Hunt, Principal Analyst at GlobalData, notes, “Ericsson’s Compact Packet Core removes deployment barriers with its pre-integrated solution, simplified configurations, and reduced footprint. This makes the migration process less complex, faster, and more cost-effective.”

With the increasing momentum of cloud-native adoption, Ericsson has already secured over 120 commercial contracts for 5G Core or cloud-native solutions. As of October 2024, the company powers 37 of the world’s 60+ live 5G SA networks, further solidifying its leadership in the cloud-native 5G Core market.

Ericsson’s Compact Packet Core is a testament to the company’s continued innovation, ensuring that CSPs can meet growing demand for scalable, flexible, and secure networks as they transition into the 5G era.
