Brighton College Dubai Inspires Young Changemakers with Sustainability Education

United Arab Emirates, Dubai, 20 February 2025: Brighton College Dubai has proudly announced the introduction of an innovative Sustainability Curriculum in its Pre-Prep School, marking a significant step towards embedding environmental responsibility from the earliest years of education. Designed for children aged 3 to 7, the new curriculum aligns with the UAE’s National Framework for Sustainable Development and the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), equipping young learners with the knowledge and skills to contribute meaningfully to the planet’s future.

The initiative introduces sustainability concepts in an age-appropriate and engaging manner. Research highlights the benefits of early sustainability education, with UNESCO affirming that childhood exposure to environmental themes cultivate lifelong values of responsibility and stewardship. By integrating sustainability into everyday learning, Brighton College Dubai ensures that pupils not only understand global challenges but also develop the critical thinking skills needed to tackle them.

Katy Cooke, Head of Pre-Prep at Brighton College Dubai, said: “Sustainability is no longer just an aspiration – it’s a necessity. By introducing these concepts at an early age, we’re nurturing a generation of global citizens who are informed, empathetic, and motivated to protect the world they inhabit. Our curriculum makes sustainability tangible and relevant, encouraging young learners to take simple but meaningful actions and fostering confidence in their ability to contribute to a better future.”

The curriculum follows a structured progression, beginning in FS1, where three- and four-year-olds learn about caring for the earth and the importance of reducing waste. In FS2, children build on this foundation by exploring water conservation and sustainable food practices. By Year 1 (5-6 years), pupils gain a deeper understanding of biodiversity and responsible waste management, while Year 2 (6-7 years) broadens their perspective to global sustainability issues, including climate action and personal responsibility. This carefully sequenced approach ensures that pupils deepen their understanding at every stage through interactive and hands-on learning experiences.

The curriculum has already been put into action, with FS2 pupils recently engaging in a range of sustainability-focused activities. In Science lessons, they explored the difference between disposable and recyclable waste, reinforcing the importance of sustainable living. They read a story about recycling and applied their learning by sorting trash collected at school. As part of their practical experience, the children took part in litter picking at the small-world beach area, created recycling signs through art, and worked on a collaborative piece using only recycled materials. These activities not only strengthened their understanding but also made sustainability a tangible and enjoyable part of their learning experience.

Brighton College Dubai’s sustainability curriculum is aligned with several key Sustainable Development Goals, including Climate Action, Responsible Consumption and Production, and Life on Land. It also supports the UAE’s sustainability priorities, particularly in the areas of water conservation and food security. By making connections between global goals and local initiatives, the programme ensures that pupils understand the broader impact of their actions while fostering a sense of responsibility within their immediate environment.

More than just an academic initiative, the Sustainability Curriculum at Brighton College Dubai is a commitment to shaping environmentally responsible citizens. By introducing sustainability education in Pre-Prep, the College is inculcating a proactive mindset among young learners, giving them the confidence and tools to contribute to a more sustainable world.

With this innovative approach, Brighton College Dubai is setting a new benchmark for sustainability education, proving that it is never too early to make a difference. For more information on Brighton College Dubai’s Pre-Prep Sustainability Curriculum, please visit: www.brightoncollegedubai.ae
