Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates, November 11, 2024: Cleveland Clinic Abu Dhabi, part of the M42 group, has made history by performing the UAE’s first robotic mastectomy, marking a significant milestone in breast cancer treatment. This pioneering procedure, the first of its kind within the Cleveland Clinic global network, introduces a groundbreaking and minimally invasive surgical option that will greatly reduce the burden of breast cancer on patients in the region.

Traditionally, mastectomy surgery requires large chest incisions, resulting in visible scarring, loss of sensation, and a lengthy recovery period. However, the robotic mastectomy procedure, utilizing the advanced Da Vinci single-port robotic system, offers a transformative alternative. By making a small incision under the armpit, the technology enables precise tissue removal while preserving the surrounding nerves, thus reducing complications and recovery times. This innovation also allows for tissue removal and immediate reconstruction in a single procedure.

Dr. George Haber, CEO of Cleveland Clinic Abu Dhabi, stated: “Introducing robotic mastectomy represents a transformative step in breast cancer care, not only in the UAE but also globally. We are proud to be the first in the Cleveland Clinic network to offer this procedure, providing our patients with a more precise, minimally invasive treatment that minimizes recovery time and preserves their quality of life.”

The procedure, led by Dr. Ahmad Matalkah, staff physician at Cleveland Clinic Abu Dhabi’s Breast Surgery Program, highlights the hospital’s leadership in robotic surgery. Dr. Matalkah explained: “Robotic breast surgery is gaining global momentum due to its precision and ability to minimize scarring. The system enhances the surgeon’s vision and control, allowing for more accurate movements, thus reducing the risk of complications such as bleeding or skin damage. By minimizing physical scars and accelerating recovery, patients can heal faster with greater confidence.”

Robotic mastectomy also allows for advanced breast reconstruction, including implant-based options that provide physical and emotional benefits. Dr. Tibor G Kovacs, staff physician at Cleveland Clinic Abu Dhabi’s Breast Surgery Program, further elaborated: “This technology helps restore breast shape with minimal side effects, enabling patients to return to their daily lives sooner.”

Though still relatively new worldwide, the Cleveland Clinic Abu Dhabi team underwent extensive training from leading robotic surgery experts to ensure the success of the procedure. While robotic mastectomy offers numerous benefits, Dr. Matalkah emphasized that not all patients are suitable candidates. “Eligibility is based on factors such as tumor size, body size, and patient health. Our team carefully evaluates each case to determine the best approach,” he added.

Cleveland Clinic Abu Dhabi continues to lead the region in robotic-assisted surgeries, offering cutting-edge procedures in various specialties, from transplants to complex cardiac surgeries. The introduction of robotic mastectomy underscores the hospital’s commitment to advancing healthcare technology and delivering world-class care in the UAE.
